He has to make the decision as to whether he is going to give Jim to the slave hunters (as society would have him do) or help him to be free (as he personally would have him do). He refuses to give Jim up. Another example of theme within the novel is how the horror of slavery is shown through Jim’s character. Jim is going to be sold by Miss Watson’s family, and as a result he runs away. Huckleberry travels with Jim, but even he treats him like a piece of property, however being as Huck is white Jim does whatever Huckleberry wants.
