How To Upgrade a Personal Computer!

...n anti-static wrist strap and attach it to a part of the case away from any electrical components inside the computer. Then touch the case itself to make sure you have discharged the static electricity away from both you and the computer. I had to start by carefully placing the computer upright to remove the screws from the back of the case. Then I had to slide the side covers off from both sides of the computer. Step Five: After I removed the side panels I removed the old ram chip, it was a card of pc100 128 Meg of Ram. The procedure for removing ram is to push the white tabs away from the sides to loosen it. Very carefully remove the ram from the memory slot, place it in an anti static bag and set it aside. I removed the new ram from another anti static bag and carefully lined up the notches in the ram with the notches in the Ram slot on the mother board. You need to make sure the white tabs are pushed out toward the ends of the mother board away from the ram chip. Carefully and very gently push the ram straight down into the memory slot until it locks down into the slot. You will know it is done correctly when the white tabs move up and attach themselves to the sides of the ram chip. Step Six: The next step is to remove the old CD Rom. The procedure to do this is real complicated compared to the procedure for replacing ram. The first step you have to do is unhook the cables going to the CD Rom. There are three sets of cables and all three are different .The first set is for the power, the second cable is for the ribbon cable it comes from the CD Rom and goes to the mother board. There are a total of four screws in each CD Rom drive. Two are on each side of the CD Rom drive. Remove the screws and then carefully slide out the old CD Rom drive. Then place the new one in the drive bay. Replace the screws and reattach the cables to the CD Rom drive. Important note: about the ribbon cable, it has a pink stripe on one side of the cable. If not installed correctly you will get an error when you restart the computer telling you the CD Rom is not there. The pink stripe has to be facing you. The last set of cables is the ground cable. You also have to set the CD Rom drive as the master drive. If you only have one installed, if you have two of them as I do, one will be set as the master and the other will be set as the slave drive. There are pin configurations on the back of the CD Rom that are called jumpers. You have to set each one of them on each CD Rom drive. STEP SEVEN: This is the final step. Double check to make sure every thing is hooked up correctly...
