These gangs are not open to anyone- you must be of their race. For instance, if you are a White male and want to stay alive in prison, your best bet is to join the White Arian Skinheads. You begin to adopt their racial views of superiority and begin to believe that all other races are inferior, and thus hate builds up. If you are not already a skinhead when you enter prison, you must kill a black guy in order to join the gang. Prison is rough and full of prejudice. Gangs are not the only negative aspect to prisons- they are also characterized by extreme violence. Ever heard the phrase, "Fight, F**k, or bust a .40"? Well I heard it when my cousin told me about his experiences in prison. He said that violence was a part of everyday life, and that in order to survive, you had to join a gang and fight for your gang. Stories of inmates being killed in prison in not uncommon. Fighting is an ordinary, daily occurrence at prison. Fighting is just a part of prison life. It is very hard to be rehabilitated from a violent past if one of the only things you are doing in prison is fighting. Violence and mass gang rape are one of the many things that describe our American prisons today. Besides the prejudice and deadly violence and gang rape, there is something else in prisons that make them one of the worst places to be: Drugs. Prisons are full of drugs. The gang with the most power is usually the gang that has the ability to bring in the most drugs into the prison. There are drugs constantly smuggled into prisons, and this causes a huge problem for people who are behind bars for doing drugs, yet are exposed to more drugs in prison than outside in the real world. ...
