How and why Gatsby is revealed in the first three chapters of "teh Great Gatsby by F Scott Fitzgerald

...en Nick mentions he lives on West Egg. “You must know Gatsby.” Daisy immediately demanded “Gatsby?… what Gatsby?” This creates mystery and implies that Daisy knows the name. Nick later tries to tell Ms Baker that he is Gatsby’s neighbour, but she is too intent on eavesdropping on Tom’s telephone conversation. Nick, back at his own house, spots Gatsby’s figure emerging from the shadows of his masion “regarding the silver pepper of the stars.” Nick decides to call over to Gatsby, but the figure “gave a sudden intimation that he was content to be alone.” Gatsby then reached out his arms in the direction of the water to the green light far away. When Nick turns back to Gatsby’s house, he has vanished. The strange figure of Gatsby reaching out across the water creates images of unfulfilled desire and longing for something/someone. The mystery continues to elude Nick as Gatsby vanished back into his house. Gatsby’s name is again “namedropped” at a party at Tom and his mistress Myrtle’s appartment in New York city. Catherine; the sister of Myrtle, finds out that Nick lives on West Egg and tell Nick of a party she went to at Gatsby’s. “They say he’s a nephew or cousin of Kaiser Wilheim’s. That’s where all his money comes from.” There is a persistant theme of mystery around Gatsby and the intrigue as to how he obtained his money- how he can afford to throw parties and own such a lavish mansion. One of Gatsby’s parties is described at the beginning of chapter three. His expensive possessions ie. Rolls-Royce are casually mentioned and events like the delivery of five crates of oranges and lemons arriving, all incorperated in “normal weekend activities.” The party, extremely bright, loud and ostentatious get in full swing by seven; with “no thin five-piece affair, but a whole pitful of oboes and tombones and saxophones…” playing “yellow cocktail music.” Nick realises that he is one of the only one actually invited to this party as “People were not invited- they went there.” A very low percentage of guests really had a connection to Gatsby “they were introduced by somebody who knew Gatsby, and after that they conducted themselves according to the rules of behaviour associated with an amusement park.
