... are made to appeal to a certain group of animals or a certain demographic. Spider’s silk is genetically determined by the species of spider. Some spiders produce silk with more transparency than others, there is even certain species where the web is a golden color. With over seven kinds of spider silk, many spiders weave complex works of art. Because the different proteins in a spider's silk are encoded in the animal's DNA, (Craig 1995) it is safe to say that each web and strand of silk is unique. An extensive look at spider silk DNA reports reveals that the gene for flagelliform silk has some marvelous architecture of its own. Like other silk genes, the DNA that codes for flagelliform silk is a repetitive string of nucleotides (Stokstad 2000). They way that the nucleotides are arranged and formed could prove to be a gateway for evolution and diversity. An evolutionary biologist states: “This structure is totally different from anything we’ve ever seen in spiders“(Stokstad 2000). The structure observed by the biologists refers to the gene for silk; it seems to be designed to allow considerable variation in species. Silk proteins are made of repeating amino acid motifs. Some researchers think this chain of spring-like helices is a key to the strength and elasticity of silk, and the regularity may help the liquid proteins self-assemble into fibers as they are pulled out of the silk glands (Stokstad 2000). Some researchers suggest that with the way the nucleotides are always changing in order, it would n...
