homelessness
...iled to meet the needs of the poor during Orwell¡¯s time and continues to remain insufficient for the poor in this modern time period. A rigorous day of labor only resulted in a few pieces of currency. Despite the improvements in the workplace and increased wages, many people continue to live in astonishing conditions of poverty. Orwell describes his visit to London, where his living conditions remained void of any luxury. He was poor and continued to move downward in a spiral of poverty. He did not have a job and had to resort to begging for money off the streets. Although it does not seem hard for people to beg in the streets, there were many regulations in London that complicated these matters. These regulations decreased the overall earnings of the beggars. Despite the humiliating circumstances involved in begging, many people had no choice but to abandon their pride in hopes of receiving some spare change or a few morsels of food. There were alternatives to begging. Orwell reveals that London offered the poor with dormitories and other facilities to live in while trying to make a decent living. Nevertheless, it was a filthy place too live. There were far too many homeless people to house. An interesting claim that Orwell draws upon is that a majority of the poor who occupied these dormitories in London were men. Although it was hard to sleep at these facilities they had a place to live and be warm. These facilities had lots of bugs and other infested diseases. Today in the United States, there are lots of facilities where people can sleep and eat. It is cleaner and the facilities appear compared to the buildings described by Orwell. Moreover, many of these facilities are free. In addition, the government plays an increased role in providing aid for the homeless. There are many programs that try to help them. While there are still people who resort to odd ways of making a living such as working as windshield wipers off the corner of freeways and intersections, there are others who work in government sponsored cleanup projects and other stuff. In the novel, there were not a lot of people who used drugs but today there are a lot more people who uses drugs. Most homeless people in the United States are drug addicts and does not know how to use money in such a way that they can survive off of couple dollars. In the novel the homeless people do not use drugs or work to get drugs. The use of drugs is up in the United States and a lot of people are becoming homeless because of that. But drugs are not the only reason that people become homeless. In the article by St. Mungos it exclaims that people became homeless by the break up of families and crime. St. Mungo¡¯s also exclaims that some people who are homeless are mentally ill, physically ill, heavy drinkers and drug users. Mungo¡¯s also says that most homeless people have a hard time getting off the streets because there might not be enough beds for them at shelters and organizations. This is the same as before in the 1930¡¯s. In the novel Bozo was one of the characters that had a physical problem and couldn¡¯t work to get money. It was hard for him to find jobs because of his disabilities. Also in the novel Orwell¡¯s friend Boris was also disabled by his leg. He could not get a decent job because of his disabilities. St. Mungo¡¯s ideas of how homeless...
