With the increasing number of people in home schooling, colleges have changed their stance on accepting home schooled students. A Harvard admissions officer was quoted as saying “Ten years ago, if you didn’t have a diploma we didn’t want you. Today we’re always willing to look at different kinds of credentials” (pg. 3). There are a number of reasons why parents choose to place their children in home schooling some of which include parents who have children with special needs, a stronger parent-child relationship, and to keep children away from the negative influences of public schools. The purpose of this article was to give the reader a better understanding of what some of the pros and cons of home schooling and to address the issue with some real life examples. The only statistics given are those of how many students are in home schooling. It is also stated that home schooling has now become legal in all 50 states. Since there were arguments given from both critics and parents of home schooled children there weren’t any visible generalizations or assumptions. This article did not state the authors opinion on the matter it was merely stating what public school systems and home schooled children and their parents had to say. However the article failed to go in depth about what happened to students who tried home schooling with no success. The authors conclude that if home schooling inspires the love of learning then it has reached the ultimate goal of any educational path. “The ultimate goal of any educational path is to inspire love of learning, a passion that lasts a lifetime.” (pg. 4).
