Research shows that viewing aggressive behavior can cause us to act out more aggressively, yet Hollywood officials still claim that the results of these types of studies are inconclusive. For example, CBS invested $290,000, in 1978, for a six-year study on the effect of television on teenage boys. William Belson, who conducted the study, concluded the evidence is very strongly supportive of the hypothesis that long term exposure to violence increases the degree to which boys engage in a violence of a serious kind. Movies reflect violence because it is a reflection of real life. Violent images are brought about in movies because of a violent society. Hollywood claims that it is societies fault for violence and that movies only reflect the violence. Movies reflect reality (Hollywood’s 2). Director Paul Verhoeven explains that violence in movies is an art form. “Art is a reflection of the world, it isn’t Hollywood’s fault if there is ugliness in entertainment, because Hollywood is simply showing the truth about an ugly society”(Hollywood’s 2). So if movies are reflecting the realism of a violent society, how is it that more violence is shown on the big screen than one sees in everyday life? Hollywood is lying. Hollywood is teling the public not to blame the industry for violence in movies but instead blame society. Hollywood also says that violent movies tell the truth about a violent society. But Hollywood contradicts itself by saying that movies are only fiction and should be regarded as such. If an individual does not wish to watch a violent movie, nobody is forcing him or her to watch. Entertainment spokespersons constantly remind us that, “If you don’t like it, just shut it off” (Hollywood’s 3). Which is a logical suggestion.
