...onally escapes reality, and his lost self identity. The fact that Holden has a disability to face the future are caused of many things. One would be his outburst of lies. When Holden had a conversation with Mrs. Morrow (his classmates mother), he claimed himself to be “Ruldolf Schmidt”, which was a janitor at his school(Pencey). This lie has revealed his inner feelings. He personifies himself to be the janitor because he senses himself to be lonely and groomy, just like a janitor would. This has led to Holdens disability accept the future because he is not comfortable with himself, and believes it is a necessity to develop a lie so that his well being will be covered. Another incident where Holden displays lies to cover himself would be when he lies to Sunny(a prostitute in a hotel that he stayed at), claiming that he had an operation on his calvicord , as an excuse to not have sex. Holden uses this lie to escape the future because he is not ready to have sex. This displays that Holden is not ready for the future, he had to make up a lie to excuse for what will happen. Although Holden is suffering from his lies which led him to the point where he is unable to face the future. From punctilious observations from his speech, he has displayed clearly that his constant escapes from reality had also led him to his disability to face the future. When Holden visited his former history teacher, Mr Spencer, they had a long conversation and Mr Spencer gave Holden a lecture on how he should feel concerned for his future. Holden then felt quite depressed for Mr. Spencers words are true, he escaped this situation by telling Mr Spencer that he left his equipment in the gym and had to get it. This clearly shows that Holden’s escape from reality links to his disability to face the future because he is escaping from the truth about his future that was told by Mr Spencer.
