History of the Dogo

...Endurance The popularity of the Perro de Pelea Cordobes was strongly reduced as a result of the fact that dogfight were forbidden by law in the beginning of the 20th century. Antonio Nores Martinez used this old fighting dogs as a basis for a new breed: The Dogo-Argentino !! The Dogo Argentino was developed for hunting the wild boar and the puma. Creating this breed leaded to some difficulties, because you expect other qualities from a fighting dog than of a hunting dog. Qualities demanded of the Dogo-Argentino: · Better nose · More weight · Better endurance · Fighting among each other was ABSOLUTELY FORBIDDEN because on a huntingtrip they used more Dogos at a time. Especially for the heavy wild boar ! It costed lots of expertise to reach this goal. Characteristics noted by Antonio Nores Martinez in 1947: · The dog must hunt silently on the trail and may only get loud during the fight with his prey. · The dog must hunt with a "high nose" , like the Pointer. This because the puma often crosses his own track, walks circles or makes tremendous jumps to mislead the dog. Eventually the Dogo always gets as quickly as possible to his prey. · The dog must be more like a fighting dog than a very fast dog, because it is easier to run faster than a wild boar or puma than to catch it, hold it and - if needed - kill it. · The dog must have lots of courage; in spite of his wounds he must keep the prey until there is help or he must finnish it himself. · White of coulour to be easily located by sight. His basis breeding dog was always the old fighting dog: Perro de Pelea Cordobes. When the result of the numerous crossing showed a common similarity, some families were founded. With these families he made also crossings. Important families were: GUARANI and ARAUCANA. Together with his brother augustin, Antonio continued...
