...ated basketball in 1891. James Naismith was born in Ramsay Township Almonte, Ontario. He got his education at McGill University and also at Presbyterian College in Montreal. He was the physical education teacher at the Christian Workers YMCA (now known as Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts) from 1890 to 1895. Dr. Luther Gulick brought in Naismith to the Springfield College gym class to teach a competitive group of young men a sport between the seasons of football and baseball.
