On the night of June 20, Madame Tourzel, the governess of the children, dressed as the Baroness de Korff. The King’s two children were dressed as her children and Louis and Marie Antoinette wre both dressed in dark clothes. Alex von Fersen, driving an average carriage, picked up the royal family. They drove to the edge of Paris then switched to another carriage. Louis was soon recognized by Jean-Babtiste Drouet, the town postmaster. When the carriage left, Drouet and a friend took off across took off to a town in Lorraine called Varrenes. When the King and Queen arrived in Varrenes, the National Guard, took the King and his family back to Paris with them. Louis XVI was distrusted by his people, and his power couldn’t be regained. The next set of events came when France declared war on Austria. Marie Antoinette gave France’s strategic plans to Austria in hopes that Austria would win the war and destroy the revolutionaries as well. When the people found this out, they were enraged. They imprisoned Marie for her duplicity in the war, and imprisoned Louis XVI for his tyranny during peacetime. In the end, they were both put to death. On August 10, 1792, a mob of 30,000 people advanced toward Tuileries Palace to capture Louis XVI. Louis XVI was given information that the angry mob was on their way. He decided to move himself and his family to the Legislative Assembly building for he had been told they could not defend him in the palace. The King had fled the palace with his 300 volunteers of the order of the Chevaliers de St. Louis, who were to protect him, he had left no orders for the Swiss guard who defended the Tuileries. When the mob approached the palace, the guards ran to the top walls to try and fight off the mob with muskets. After firing a few rounds, the guards gave up, because they barely did any damage, so ...
