As well as overindulgence, our ‘fine’ young characters shine on their immoral ways by “playing the dice at day and night” (Chaucer, 345) and wearing their luck thin. This exact greed is demonstrated again when, upon discovering a heap of wealth, each man ends dead by the avarice of his brethren. “He happened, by chance to take a bottle which had poison in it, and drank, and gave his comrade a drink too, so that they both soon died.” (Chaucer, 365).
