... Most of Hemingway’s books take place in Italian or Spanish speaking countries. “To Have and To Have Not “is not a popular Ernest Hemingway book. It was originally two short stories with an ending added on. It was made into a movie however they completely changed the setting to make the movie more interesting. “To Have and To Have Not” was the only time Ernest Hemingway wrote in literary trends rather than create his own. “To Have and To Have Not” was banned by several places a year after it was released. “To Have and To Have Not” reflects Hemingway’s own personal devils and his tough guy macho attitude. This book has a socioeconomic dimension not found in other Hemingway books. The average American’s fears and uncertainties were expressed in this book. “To Have and To Have Not” was reflective of the time, when people were called derogatory names. “To Have and To Have Not” was a preview to Hemingway’s greatest novel “For Whom the Bell Tolls.” This can be argues by some whether “For Whom the Bell Tolls” was his greatest novel. The worst story “To Have and To Have Not” compares to his Pulitzer Prize winner “Old Man and the Sea”. Santiago the main character of “The Old Man and the Sea” and Harry the main character in “To Have and To Have Not” are alike in some ways yet different. Both characters are very courageous men, and both are down on their luck. They do things to prove how brave they are even though they are facing misfortune. Santiago faces his when he attempts to catch the giant marlin even though the village people think he is unlucky. Harry is brave but proves it in a different way then Santiago by doing illegal things that are very dangerous. Harry and Santiago both do what they need to do to survive even though the situations are different. The differences between the two men are respect and loyalty along with being a teacher. Santiago treats Manolin with respect and loyalty. Harry does not show his men the same, he even threatens to kill them if they don’t do what Harry wants. Santiago is a teacher were Harry has no patience for that. Harry is a rough macho-man and Santiago is a macho-man but more caring. A common theme in every Hemingway book is a hero. ...
