...years. Truman first discovered he was a leader when he fought and was in command of the Battery D of the 129th Field Artillery, 35the division, American Expeditionary Force during World War 1. When Truman returned from the war in 1919 he married Elizabeth Wallace. In 1934 Truman was elected to the senate. Mrs. Truman was Truman’s secretary. Truman ran for reelection of senate in 1940 and it seemed like he couldn’t win, but he did. In 1944 Truman ran for vice president with Franklin Roosevelt. Truman and Roosevelt won. Truman was vice president for eighty-three days. Then Roosevelt died and Truman became president. Soon after Truman became president he faced problems with Japan. Truman ordered Japan to surrender, but they wouldn’t so Truman decided to drop the atomic bombs which were a new super weapon. At 9:15 on August 6, 1945 a B-29 dropped “Little Boy,” which was the first atom bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima and had a force equal to 20,000 tons of TNT and killed, or injured 75,000 people. The second bomb, “Fat Man,” was dropped on Nagasaki three days after the first bomb was dropped which killed or injured 35,000 people. In July of 1945 Truman wrote to his wife, “We’ll end the war sooner now. And think of all the kids who won’t be killed.” In the spring of 1946 Truman negotiated peace with Japan. Truman decided he would run for reelection. When he was campaigning he would travel far and wide and spoke many times. He wanted people to vote for him so he could protect the programs that had been very beneficial to them. In 1948 Truman was reelected to office. When Truman defeated Thomas E.
