Because Hammurabi wrote these laws around 1728-1686 B.C., many of his laws cannot be applied to the laws that are used today. However, there are still some old fashion laws that should be presently applied. One of the laws Hammurabi instituted provides an excellent solution to stop people from fighting. In his law, no.206 states that if a man has struck another in a quarrel, and caused him a permanent injury, that man shall swear, “I struck him without malice,” and shall pay the doctor. This particular punishment has a significant influence on the issue of violence because punishment always has a terrifying affect on people. It allows the people who inflicted the others to have to indemnify for what they have committed. This would also scare them away from being violent since not everyone has the extra money to pay for someone else’s medical treatment while some has the money but does not want to pay for it. Everybody wants justice in their life. Many people believe justice means being fair, right and also the quality of being reasonable.
