Hamlet- a Good king?

... Ophelia. With all this tragedy occurring, the audience and readers can argue that Hamlet has really gone mad. Although all the people dying and tragedies that were occurring could lead a man to insanity, I still believe Hamlet was sane. "I am but mad north-northwest: when the wind is southerly I know a hawk from a handsaw" His acting insane was a mask, which protects him from Claudius. Behind this mask, Hamlet hides the secret of king Hamlet’s death, and the promise to the ghost, which Hamlet has to avenge his father’s death. His pretending to be insane helps him escape, Claudius’ fury of him, and persuades people to believe that he is mad. No insane man could have thought out such a good plan, to catch a king in his lies. This shows, that as a king, Hamlet would have had the awareness and knowledge to live up to the standards of being a good king. His loyalty to his mother through out the play stood out very clear from the beginning. Although he was so upset and angry with her for re-marrying so soon, he respected her and stayed devoted to her. In Act 1, ii, Claudius almost begs Hamlet to not go to Wittenburg, where as he replies to Gertrude with such respect and honor when she requests her wishes. “I shall in my best obey you, madam” (Act 1,ii, 120). If Hamlet were alive to serve as a king for his country, I truly feel that he would have been loyal to his country and people. He would have respected the people who respect him and would do all deeds in selfless manners. In all this agony that he was going through, he didn’t feel sorry for himself, he just acted out in rage. Courage and bravery are two big aspects of being a good king. Without bravery and courage, a king wouldn’t be able to serve...
