In Shakespeare’s first scenes of Hamlet he had the appearance of the ghost and the court scene. The movie didn’t have this and it made Hamlet’s motivation unclear. So unless you had read the book you didn’t really know what Hamlet was up to. The happiness of Claudius and Gertrude was portrayed really well in this movie, it expressed how quickly and easily Gertrude moved on. Hamlet’s emotions in this movie were different from in the play. This Hamlet was not the same cautious coward that was in the play but he was an angry, energetic, and frustrated character. I did not feel that this was a good thing. Hamlet should have been distraught and confused, because after all he suspected that his father was murdered by his uncle, who then married his mother. The madness of Ophelia is very well played in my opinion, because her madness was one of the hardest to play. In both the movie and the play she expressed her confusion in regards to her sexuality. She sang songs about how men are controlled by their penis and how they are to blame. Ophelia even came on to the king and her own brother. Hamlet’s madness made a lot of his plans unclear, such as after the play when he was bouncing around the room and talking nonsense, because of all that movement you couldn’t quite understand the feelings he was trying to express. The graveyard scene in the movie did not express the feeling of sorrow and grief that both Hamlet and Laertes felt over the death of Ophelia as well as the play, because the actions in this case did not speak better than words (they cut out several important lines).
