...appear. When it does Hamlet follows it into the woods. There the ghost tells Hamlet the story of his murder. He then asks Hamlet to gain revenge for him and kill Claudius. The ghost tells Hamlet, “Let not the royal bed of Denmark be/ A couch for luxury and damned incest (1.5 89-90).” The ghost then reappears later in the play when Hamlet is in his mother’s room. His mother can’t see the ghost, so she is convinced Hamlet is crazy when he is talking to it. The second part of the play is the detective story. After the ghost tells Hamlet that Claudius murdered him, he must determine if it was truly him who committed the murder. Also by finding out if it was Claudius he would be able to tell if the ghost was truly his father and not the Devil. In order to discover the truth, Hamlet, pretended to be mad. He also designs a play depicting a murder similar to the supposed one of his father. Hamlet plans to perform the play in front of his Uncle to see his reaction. “Even with the very comment of thy soul/ observe my uncle. If his occulted guilt/ Do not itself unkennel in one speech, / It is a damned ghost that we have seen, And my imaginations are as foul (3.2 85-88).” After the play murder Claudius gets up and leaves the room.
