Halloween
...on the household. This day was known to mark the end of an old year and the beginning of a new one. Back then the church looked upon this ceremony as the works of the devil. They proposed that gods and goddess of other religions were only myths and the spirits that arrived at their homes were nothing but real figures. As time passed, customs associated with this night were ghosts, skeletons and scary faces that were related to the spirits that visited each house on the night of October 31st. 1500 years ago the celebration included burning and sacrificing in celebration of the dead the new harvest year yet to come. The first fruit ever to be carved and to be lit up were gourds and turnips. These scary faces were made in hopes to ward off the evil spirits from visiting their house on this night. October 31st people were accustomed and started to expect the visitors and decorate their homes to make the occasion more joyous. Soon the souls stopped coming but the people were accustomed to the night and enjoyed it so much they kept the tradition going. Children of all sorts took the place of the spirits and even mocked them by dressing up as souls, skeletons and ghosts. Homeowners decorated their houses with ornaments and banners to show they still participated in the ancient ceremony. Halloween was now looked at as a holiday and not as a night of horror where people were forced to ration foods to dead souls in turn so their homes would not be cursed upon. Now the night was full of joy and happiness, and not dreaded by homeowners. The night transformed into a holiday celebrated widely by many people. In the present day, Halloween is celebrated very differently in comparison to 1500 years ago. Today people look forward to October 31st and decorate their homes with black, yellow and orange. We now use pumpkins instead of turnips to carve scary faces to help decorate the exterior of our houses. As time passed people started to relate other objects to Halloween such as; spiders, witches, mummies and other things to help spice up the night. Candy is handed out instead of fruits and vegetables, which helps Halloween to be looked upon as a joyous occasion. Groups of children are assembled and chaperon...
