The fifth day is "Bid Day," when women receive their invitations to join. Those selected for sororities are a group of women who have chosen to come together for support and assistance. Through sororities students build relationships that last far beyond the college years. Members consist of a group of diverse people who belong to different sororities. Sororities contain many different personalities. The sorority women are also diverse in their religions, race, and beliefs. Sorority girls join to feel apart of a group or organization. Developing life-long friendships with the members in their chapter help make the campus seem smaller. (Greek Affairs) I would encourage freshman to at least go through rush their first year for the sole purpose of meeting people. The more people students get to know, the more comfortable they will be. It gives someone a good start for college. The time spent with a sorority is optional. The more time you put into the sorority the more benefits you will receive. Some people spend over 20 hours a week with their chapters while others may only spend 2 hours at the weekly meeting. Everyone likes to have a good time, but sorority life is nothing like the media has portrayed it. There are shows out now that are supposed to resemble sorority life, yet they are in many ways different than how life actually is. The media has made many stereo types for sororities. Some see sorority women as the girls who flip their hair and wear tight clothes to get attention from the Abercrombie and Fitch wearing wannabes. This in fact may be a true statement for some sororities but not for most. Media also implies that people join sororities for the sole purpose of drinking and partying. Yes, social events contain alcohol but members are not obligated to drink by any means. Hazing is prohibited in a sorority. Women receive gifts and treats for being new members, verses being hazed. There are many other reasons to join a sorority other than to be known for these stereo types. Sororities offer everything that future employers are looking for. They develop social skills, provide leadership opportunities, and partake in community service projects. Social skills are developed by interacting with women throughout sororities and intermixing with fraternities during parties. Women in sororities tend to be more outgoing and personable...
