Additionally Demeter, the mother of Persephone, who is also a goddess of fertility, refuses to work until Hades releases her daughter. After numerous criticisms, Hades agrees to release Persephone but only after she has a final meal with him. During their supper Persephone breaks the code of hospitality by eating four pomegranate seeds. Hades tries to keep her permanently for this reason but is met with resistance from Demeter. Zeus resolves this quarrel between Hades, Demeter and Persephone by having Persephone stay with Hades for four months every year. ZeusĄŻ decision was fair and wise because it showed his effort to maintain a sense of responsibility, defend his laws and keep peace. ZeusĄŻ decision was fair because Persephone was responsible for her action of breaking the code of hospitality. Persephone fasted throughout her unwanted stay in the underground world because she was aware of the code of hospitality. Even though Persephone knew the consequence, that she would have to stay with Hades, she took food from Hades. Regardless of quantity, Persephone shouldnĄŻt have eaten any food from Hades, and therefore take responsibility for her own actions. Also, ZeusĄŻ decision was a wise one, because he was consistent with his own code of hospitality. The code of hospitality was a law made by Zeus. If he didnĄŻt follow his own rules and showed flexibility towards Persephone, who is his daughter, he would have been criticized for showing favoritism towards her. Also as a leader, Zeus needs to abide to his own rules and be a good role model for the other gods. Zeus made the right decision because it stopped further damage to by ending the conflict.
