Great Expectations
...ell in love with. Pip sees Biddy as his confidant whom he can greatly trust many secrets with. When Biddy comes to live with Pip’s family he notices her in a different light; see is burgeoning into a woman. Pip tells her his plans for being a gentleman and how ashamed of Joe’s commonness he is. Pip receives a chance to become a gentleman and leaves for London. Upon his return he wants to marry Biddy and when he goes to tell her he finds that Biddy has married Joe. He does not say anything though because he loves them both and he knows he was just to late. Biddy is much wiser than Pip. Biddy tells Pip that Estella is not the girl for him and he should not be ashamed of Joe because when Joe married his sister, Mrs. Joe, he accepted Pip as his own child. When Pip went off to London Biddy was skeptical of Pip’s feelings toward his family and to her because of his newly found position she thought that he had become a completely haughty man. Biddy and Pip have matured together and have found many things in each other they did not except to see. Biddy is not important to pip’s great expectations. Pip’s great expectations were for him to go to London, leave his family behind, and become a gentleman. She did not have any effect on Pip’s reasoning for accepting his great expectations. He thought that by becoming a gentleman he could be worthy of Estella’s affection and was willing to sacrifice his relationship with Mrs. Joe, Joe, and Biddy to do so. If Biddy were not the story it would not have any effect on Pip’s decision. Friendship and love develop out of suffering and sharing, and cannot be bought or sold. Biddy has found this to be true and has taught pip this lesson. When Pip told Biddy he was ashamed of Joe, Biddy taught him that love is important and you should not sacrifice it for anything. When Pip tells Biddy that he wants to be a gentleman because of Estella, Biddy says that she is not worth his cause. When Mrs. Joe died from being beaten, Joe and Biddy find themselves in love and get married. Pip also loves Biddy and Joe that is why he does not say anything to them.
