Graffiti. Art or not?
...uty, it will be proven that graffiti is an art form such as sculpture, painting and drawing and that it may even be more socially benefic than so called “real art”. Graffiti can be categorized essentially into categories: positive graffiti, which is found on legally sanctioned walls and is created by graffiti to artist to promote a product or to convey and idea and negative graffiti which is implicates vandalism and arbitrary signs painted on walls.(erica phillips) As a society we have rejected negative graffiti; however, the artistic value of positive graffiti is still questionable for some. By analyzing the technique and talent that is required to produce positive graffiti, the fact that graffiti has endured over 40 years since its revolution and by analyzing the fact that the art world and galleries have accepted it as a true art form it will be proven that graffiti should be considered art based on its sheer beauty and on its artistic value. In addition, the freedom of expression is guaranteed in the Canadian charter of rights and liberties; it is a fundamental liberty assured to all regardless of religion, color, age or culture. Expression is one of the most influence rights because it allows to revolt and to change our societies. The members of our society have many ways of expressing themselves: graffiti is one of theses mediums. Art as always been a form of expression used by many to convey their thoughts, needs, disappointments. Graffiti is a form of expression even more truthfully and honest then conventional art. By examining its availability a to all, its mass exposure and its expression for minorities it will be proven that like art, positive graffiti is a great form of expression. Art has long been an intricate part of our society. Art as always been used as a method in our society to aid children and youth through troublesome times; graffiti in the last twenty years as also been utilized for the same needs. Further, art has been utilized for some time to decorate and beautify our society. Graffiti, in its own means, serves the same purpose. Art and our world are also linked through our pasts; art is used as a medium to connect our society to the former society of the pasts. Art historical value is enormous; in the same manner graffiti’s historical value is as important. By exploring the preceding topics it will be proven that graffiti, as art, plays an elaborate role in our society and therefor has an equal social value as art. In conclusion, the evaluation of graffiti’s social value and graffiti’s value of expression and graffiti’s artistic value and sheer beauty has certainly proven that graffiti is an art form and that it may even be more socia...
