Gothic Element in Buffy The Vampire Slayer
...e’s fighting herself. When Buffy dreams in the hospital about Faith telling her what to do this is another display of the double. She is talking to herself and telling herself what she needs to do. Faith is supposed to be herself and she realizes she’s no better than Faith was. When the scene is shown of the school library it portrays gothic architecture. The darkness of the shelves, the way the stairs are placed and the dark colors make it gothic architecture. The gothic architecture fits here in the library because this is where Buffy and the crew she fought evil with always met. This was the central location, where Giles also worked. Buffy has many repressed feelings and repressed emotions that seem to resurface in one way or another. The most obvious is her feelings for Angel, she can’t stop the way she acts because she loves him. When he is dying she sacrifices herself to save him, because of her love time is wasted. In the next episode she overcomes her lover for Angel and kills him and stops the portal. There are also other examples of Buffy’s repressed feelings coming out for example when the vampires attack the library in the second episode, her anger comes out when she fights in the end and overcomes All of them. We see a show of the fantastic when Angel brings Buffy to the hospital and she is almost dead and Angel breaks the door. This was unexpected and it is considered fantastic because it was out of the ordinary and different. When the Mayor is giving his speech, he starts transforming, and the sky gets dark as well this is also known as fantastic because we were not expecting this, it was different and a shock. When all the students are equipped with armor and weapons it is considered marvelous. This is because it is expected and it is not out of the ordinary for them but in our world it is out of the normal. Also when Buffy fights vampires, she has super human strength, and she doesn’t get hurt or bruised. This is marvelous because it is out of the ordinary to normal people but to her it is just an ordinary thing. The entire story of Buffy The Vampire Slayer is based on female gothic.
