...get a guy of this caliber without his stardom. It seems as though James’s mind cannot let go of the past and tends to bring it up as often as possible. He cannot even watch any of his movies without getting flashbacks of the worst events that happened at that moment, never dwelling on a good moment, always bad. When James gets a new gardener, the new gardener just happens to be another young man, in good shape, an easy target for James you could say. But not so with this young guy, this fellow has no knowledge of James Joyce at all, only barely recognizing that he did the all too famous Frankenstein. James seems to like that he will have to play hard to get with this gentleman, not something he is used to. Being the sly man that James is, he convinces the young gardener to pose for him to draw. James only does this as an escape and possible catch a glimpse of this man in the buff, or something close to it. Once again, within minutes James falls victim to his own mind and has these recollections of terrible things in his younger days. Even though these drawings may be some sort of escape for him they do not even really turn out to be real drawings, only big pieces of paper with scribbles on them, hardly something worth showing. Being the gay man that James is, he once again tries to hit on his new friend, but the friend will not have it, rejecting James. James enjoys having this new friend around, even if this friend does not want to give Whale the pleasure of seeing him in the nude. They frequent a party together, a party for the Hollywood types and James is instantly recognized by some stars from his Frankenstein movies. It is quite a moment for James, something that at first does not want to happen but then seems glad that it did end up happening. James lets the friend drive home, further pushing the relationship on him, making Clay the dominant one. Feeling sorry for himself and desperately wanting something more in life that what he was experiencing he makes a pathetic attempt to have intercourse with Clay. When behind all of this, Mr. Whale really wanted Clay to kill him. James Whale would rather have death then see his brain expiring to nothing.
