In showing authority over subordinate officers and disciplining of a commander, Colonel Shaw drew some resentment from Forbes and Thomas. In the end, Colonel Shaw won the support of his troops and succeeded in getting his regiment ready for battle. It was not that easy, being the first black regiment. Colonel Shaw had to deal with issues like equal pay and declining morale while his regiment anxiously waited for a real mission that would hopefully bring them "glory". During the civil war, blacks had a large impact on the war effort. Some say the tide of the war did not turn in favor of the north until blacks began fighting. This movie illustrates how a black unit can be an effective fighting force and that held true during the course of the Civil War. The theme of the film is the widespread racism that existed during the civil war, even by those who fought for the north.
