Her volume and enunciation differed depending on what her character was trying to prove during the play. For example, whenever Frances told the other four women that she was a Christian, Hood always made sure to increase her volume and enunciated every syllable of the word Christian. She wanted the audience to realize that being a Christian was one of Frances’s main qualities. Though Hood portrayed her character as sweet and innocent through much of the play, her voice tone eventually started to reveal another side of Frances’s personality. Trisha’s consistent doubt of Frances’s religion and the Bible angered Frances to the point where she started to argue back. In an important turning point of Frances’s character, Hood had to transform Frances from being a sweet and innocent woman to a furious and firm woman who was standing her ground. She expressed her sense of control by cleverly added seriousness to her tone. Her voice suddenly became extremely defensive and indignant. Hood’s portrayal of her character was so precise in this scene. Her rate of speech was rapidly increasing showing how angry her character was. By using her voice effectively, Hood showed the audience that Frances was a more complex character than she first seemed to be. Like Hood, Yasahura, who played Meredith, initially used her voice techniques to establish a certain impression of her character. Meredith, who had just finished college, was still immature in many ways. Yasahura knew this trait about her character and portrayed it suitably. She added a sound of whininess to her voice; her tone was full of bitterness and anger. Meredith’s choice of words was often inappropriate, so Yasahura had to use many curse words in the beginning...
