She is taken back by the intimidating appearance of the large hand to the point where she is at a loss for words. In the beginning of the story the woman is gazing upon her newlywed husband who is asleep in her arms. She is in love with him as the narrator describes the husbands handsome traits. “…She proudly bore the weight of the man’s head, blond, ruddy-complexioned, eyes closed.” “To herself she also praised his mouth, full and likable…”. The events that were next to occur were not to the woman’s admiration. While the story moves on, the woman continues to explain the affection of her husband until she looks down and sees his large hand. From that point, the hand has her undivided attention. Why her husband’s large hand is unlikable in her eyes is possibly because she is intimidated by it. One of the first characteristics that the woman notes of the hand is “It’s so big! It really is bigger than my whole head.” This could be an inference to something along the lines of foreshadowing domestic abuse. To support this theory, the woman explains near the end of the story that she is viewing her husbands hand “squeezing with the methodical pleasure of a strangler”.
