Furthermore the painting has a relief like look encompassed into the work. The lion in George Stubbs work also is constructed with the meticulous detail that the horse is, the lion pounces onto the horse in a surprising way and is brown in color. Both the lion and the horse have well defined muscles and individualized features to them. The work also contains a few trees and blue sky hidden behind some carefully constructed clouds, however the focus of this work of art is the moment of action between the horse and the lion. This work also sits next to another well developed and exquisite piece by George Stubbs entitled “ George Stubbs “Horse Attacked by a Lion” is typical of the Romanticism period and portrays many of the qualities from this time period. George Stubbs constructs his works with some of the similar concepts of this period. He incorporates ideas of elegance, content above form, color above line, being distinguished. His paintings remind me of the works done by Giovanni Battista Piranesi and Eugene Delacroix. When I first looked at the colors of the Horse Attacked by a Lion I thought of Giovanni’s works. The white colors of the horse remind me of the construction of Giovanni’s work because they are in the similar fashion of this Romanticism period. The second work I immediately thought about was the work by Eugene Delacroix and his Massacre at Chios. The oil painting has a horse worked into it but the main reason is the Similarities in the structure of the work. Both paintings have a landscape that is similar in design with a focus on the front of the paintings and the subject.
