George and Lennie
...iew, George told Lennie, “…You jus’ stand there and don’t say nothing… we won’t get no job, but if he sees ya work before he hears you talk, we’re set.”(p.6) Even though Lennie was as hard a worker as George, Lennie lacked the intelligence that George had. This was the only way that George could be sure they would get the job. These were only a few of the differences they had to work through in order to remain friends. George and Lennie shared the same dreams and looked out for each other. Their dream was to have a little house, a couple of acres, some animals, and live off the land. The work ethic they shared allowed them to save money to someday purchase their own ranch. They almost fulfilled their dream, but Lennie’s obsession of petting soft things led to his untimely death. Lennie tells George, “I got you to look after me and you got me to look after you.”(p.14) Lennie was reminding George that they would always have each other no matter what happened to them. It became George’s responsibility to keep Lennie with him at all times. The bonds George and Lennie shared remained with them until the end. George and Lennie had a wonderful friendship and had been through many things together. George took up for Lennie when he told Slim, “Lennie was jus’ scairt… he didn’t know what to do.”(p.65) After being attacked, George comforted Lennie because he had crushed Curley’s hand in self-defense.
