Managing diversity is not about getting employees to like one another; instead, it is about creating an environment that enables employees to perform their jobs. Without effectively managing the conflicts stemming from diversity, an organization is subject to a decrease in production, profitability, and the possibility of lawsuits. Under Title VII, employers may not intentionally use race, skin color, age, gender, religious beliefs, or national origin as the basis for hiring, promotions, dismissals, raises, benefits, work assignments, leaves of absence or just about any other aspect of the employment relationship. Many individual states also have anti-discrimination laws that may be even broader in scope than Federal law. Depending upon your state's discrimination laws, it may be best to file under state law for gender discrimination. The essential point to prove in gender discrimination is that the job action occurred only because of your gender. It is difficult to say whether prejudice and discrimination are unavoidable. As far as I have witnessed and as far as our textbook is concerned it has always existed, whether we like to believe it or not it will probably always exist as well. Every society has its norms, from law to ritual to language, and every person within a certain society is taught to obey the norms that go along with where they live. Those who deviate from the norms that we have set for ourselves, or that our leaders have set for us, are considered to be “weird” by society’s standards; the society is which you live is the only society which is going to matter. Those who deviate are labeled as wrong by our standards, for we punish them either through the legal system or through unfair treatment. In order to gain equal employment and fairness, traditionally male positions must be opened to females. This is the only way to shatter the glass walls and ceilings that are so prevalent in today’s society. Many women have fought discrimination and improved their own lives and the lives of countless other women over the span of several generations. The first step in creating equality in the workplace is to inform women of their rights. The next step is for these women to exercise their rights. Women can no longer allow themselves to be excluded from the workforce. Individuals concerned about equality should press for the continuation and strengthening of better paying jobs for women and this support must not come from women alone.
