Geek Love by Katherine Dunn-An Analysis of Relationships

...d of the show. It is there where she is spotted by a woman who wants to change her. In her quest to find out who she really is, she declines the offer, her mother taught her well. Miss Lick, who is in the business of “making people normal,” approaches Miranda with an offer. She actually wants to pay Miranda $10,000 dollars to cut her pig tail off. Olympia, after trying so hard to instill morals in her daughter, is encountered by Miss Lick who makes Miranda second-question her normality. It is then when Olympia devises a plan to become friends with Miss Lick, only to kill her. This shows that Olympia would do anything to show Miranda that she is no different that anybody else. Olympia has very high self-esteem. She has always tried to instill this in her brothers and sisters. Miss Lick, with no apparent handicaps, had something wrong with her. She goes around and tries to fix people and in some cases make them ugly. She actually poured acid on a beautiful woman’s face so that men wouldn’t look at her, she thought she was doing her a favor. She tries to make normal people weird and weird people normal. The father and mother of Olympia, Electra and Iphigenia, Chick and Arty, are the ones who originally instilled the morals in their children. Crystal Lil and Aloysius, the parents, although they had the wrong intentions for having their children, had all of the right intentions in raising them. Some obtained the morals, and it is fair to say that some didn’t. Crystal Lil said that, “Children are lucky if they are born with a natural talent.” p. 28 That was her thinking, she did in no way not love her children, she loved them all to death. They taught their children that they were unique, and they all were special. Arty, who ends up starting his own cult, is the dictator in the book who affects everyone. His relationship with everyone is orders. He uses Chick to perform special tasks for him with his tele-kinetic powers, he uses everyone is his cult to gain power, and he uses his father to take over his circus. Arty grew up in a family who taught them that being different was okay, however, this was not the case with Arty. In his cult, he made everyone think they were all different, that is why they cut their limbs off. They did this to be like Arty, they believed he was normal. Dr. Phyllis, who is the doctor who cuts peoples limbs off and travels with the circus, has a close relationship with Arty. She is the one who should be normal. She needs to step back and realize that what she is doing is wrong. She was kicked out of medical school because of the strange tasks she wanted to perform. Chick is the third child in the group who was the one desperate for attention. Chick was born completely normal in most respects. He looked just like anyone else, his parents were actually disappointed because they wanted a freak. They soon find out that he has tele-kinetic powers. These powers ended up created a lot of problems. Chick, although he didn’t necessarily want to, had a close relationship with Arty. Arty used Chick to do things for him. For example, he used him to put Iphigenia asleep when Dr. Phyllis performed a lobotomy on her. Chick didn’t know Arty’s intentions, but regardless, Chick did it anyway. He would do anything to make people happy. It was this weakness that Chick had that made him susceptible to other people’s control over him. In the end, it is Chick who sets everything straight by burning down the circus and killing those who made life difficult. We clearly can see that characters who should be normal aren’t.
