... shapes and vibrant colours. He had an individual approach to every day objects, such as houses, doors, rooms, balconies. For Gaudí, these did not have to be depicted as flat geometrical shapes. He created a room without any sharp corners in Casa Batlló, including a mushroom shaped fireplace with benches. Even door corners have been rounded. When I visited Casa Batlló I liked the way Gaudí gave this house a recognisable “face”, by giving the balconies in front of every window the shape of a Venetian mask. Palau Güell is a grand house and garden in the hills overlooking Barcelona and the sea. The garden wall, providing also seating, is snaking and meandering like a river around the perimeter of the property. Gaudí managed to transform this fence/seating wall into an art installation by his unusual decorating technique: he created a mosaic, covering the entire creation with broken tiles and crockery - a wild variety of patterns and colours.
