According to Webster’s New International Dictionary, a visionary is capable of beholding visions; as the visionary prophets. In other words, a visionary is a person who is looked upon by others as a good person, and they would be someone who could set a good example. Following Webster’s New International Dictionary, a lunatic is defined as wild foolishness; extravagant folly; madness. In other words, a lunatic is someone who doesn’t have all their apples in the same basket. A lunatic is someone who causes stress upon themselves and others that encounter them. Mohandas Gandhi made life easier on his people; Gandhi was a visionary. The beginning of Gandhi’s life was the building block for his success at becoming a visionary. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869 (Heinrich 21). Gandhi whose name means “grocer” was born to Putlibai and Karamchand, who was infact a provincial official of the shopkeeping class (DISCovering 27). Gandhi was influenced greatly by his parents, looking up to them as his visionary. Karamchand had a very little education, but was good at the job he did (Heinrich 8). Mohandas’s father also inspired him politically because in 1879, the Gandhi’s moved to Rajkot, an island town in Gujarat because Gandhi’s father, Karamchand, had been appointed prime minister of the Messick 2 princely state of Rajkot (Severance 1). Mohandas’s fasting techniques were learned from his mother. Day after day, little Mohan watched his mother go to the temple to pray. He watched her refuse food on her many fasting days, and whenever friends or relatives were sick, Putlibai was there to care for them (Heinrich 25). Many times in his life, Mohandas brought about change by fasting – going without food for days or even weeks (Heinrich 10). As far as Gandhi’s educational life he was successful. Mohandas attended University of Bombay; attended Samaldas College, Bhavnagr, India, 1887-1888. He received his law degree from Inner Temple, London 1891 (DISCovering 28). Since receiving his law degree, Gandhi became a courageous political leader pushing for opposition towards British imperialism (DISCovering 47). Gandhi’s political push was a simple notion; non-violence. Gandhi’s non-violence movement was very successful in India; therefor many Hindu’s looked up to him as a visionary. Gandhi’s philosophies were influential to followers all over the eastern side of the hemisphere. Gandhi believed in solving problems peacefully, without fighting (Heinrich 7).
