They believe this because by going through the stages and establishing individuals' roles in the group and other peoples views, that there should not be any confliction. On the other hand there may not be confliction within the group but there may be what Irving Janis calls 'groupthink'. This is; "A mode of thinking that people engage in when they are deeply involved in a cohesive in-group, when members' striving for unanimity overrides their motivation to realistically appraise alternative courses of action." This is when members are too close to one another to say anything against each other's thoughts or ideas. This leads to them not being able to see the wider picture or the consequences of their decision. This also creates an obstacle for group effectiveness. The members of the group will not share their doubts with the group for fear of being excluded from the group. This leads to the idea not being thought through and the outcome of this is more than likely to be failure of the tasks and the group on the whole...
