He promises to live with his mate in a secluded area far from Victor and to live harmless lives. “If you consent, neither you nor any other human being shall ever see us again; I will go to the vast wilds of South America. My food is not that of man; I do not destroy the lamb and the kid, to glut my appetite; acorns and berries afford me sufficient nourishment.” (884) Victor must realize that he is the only person capable of relieving the monster’s sadness. Although many will argue that no one has the right to create life, Victor has every right to protect himself and his family. In addition, the only way he can do so is by creating a mate for the monster. “I will revenge my injuries: if I cannot inspire love, I will cause fear; and chiefly towards you my archenemy, because my creator, do I swear inextinguishable hatred.” (884) He then goes on to threaten Victor by saying, “Have a care. I will work at your destruction, nor finish until I desolate your heart, so that you curse the hour of your birth.” (884) If Victor does not create this being for the monster, he will have to live in fear and guilt for his family’s deaths for as long as he lives. Victor should think to himself that he even yearned for a friend. He wanted someone to talk to and someone who would understand him. The monster feels the same way. However, the monster has it much worse. He is an outcast; he frightens people. Victor, on the other hand, might be a lonely person but he is still a human being.
