... that lost their lives fighting for a French republic. The French revolution which began in 1789 was one of the most brutal and significant events in world history. This revolution did not occur suddenly, for many years, well before my time, there had been many factors leading up to this civil war. These factors included dissatisfaction and hatred among the three classes of society, the monarchy and an interest in new ideas of government, and the American Revolution along with its ideas in the Declaration of Independence that inspired a revolution that was considered to be violent, yet necessary toward the evolution of France. During the French Revolution, in the year 1799 our country was ruled by Napoleon Bonaparte. Although many of my contemporaries felt that Napoleon was one of dictatorship, I personally felt that he did what was in the best interest of France. He was a military leader that successfully conquered most of Europe. When Napoleon came to power, France was currently at war with many countries. He had sought out to either crush his enemies, or make peace with them. During this time, Napoleon set out to make France the greatest nation in Europe, and education was one of the top priorities on his list. Since Napoleon believed in a system of merit and not one of family hierarchy, he felt that everyone, not only those members in the upper classes needed to be educated.
