Victor Frankenstein, the main character and most prominent narrator in the story began his life as a member of society, which he later willingly separated himself from. His creation, the monster, was born virtually alone and grew up completely isolated from any peers. As a similarity, Elizabeth, Victor’s cousin and love interest, remains completely within society’s boundaries for the entirety of the novel. Shelly shows us through her development of these three characters that existing within a society is essential to rational thinking, and that without this outside influence acting upon us we are prone to dangerous and even fatal behavior.
