He learns at the end of the movie that he has a child and that the mother of the child will not live for long. The boy's mother, despite Forrest's limited mental abilities, wants Forrest to raise the child. In the last scene of the movie, Forrest walks his son out to the bus for his first trip to school. As his son gets on the bus the last thing he says to him is, "I'll be right here when you get back."
