Film Apreciation- Compares Modern Films to Classic Films

... a musical/comedy. Also in both of these movies the viewer really isn’t sure what is going to happen until the films last scenes. This is one of the reasons why I liked each movie so much. These are really the only true comparisons between these 2 films and it’s not wrong to assume that Snatch’s director Guy Richie was probably influenced by the genius Orson Welles in some way or another. One of the most obvious examples of how Welles influenced Guy Richie is in his camera work. In the film Snatch Richie comes up with many new and exciting camera angles and editing techniques. The films opening scene is one of the best film sequences I’ve seen. It shows every character and what they do (job wise) in the movie and it is all tied together with awesome editing and music. There is also another scene where it is established that a character called Franky Four Fingers has a gambling problem. When another character tells Franky that there is an underground boxing match that you can place bets, Richie then edits in a flashback where Franky is in Vegas at a poker or blackjack table and the Elvis song, “ Viva Las Vegas,” is playing. The clip only last for about 10 seconds but it really adds to your understanding of the character. The whole movie is very visual leaving not a lot for you to think about except the continuously twisting plot. I think this is an outstanding example of creative camera work and editing. Not only did each of these movies have excellent camera work but they both had ideal soundtracks. If I hadn’t taken this coarse I probably would have never noticed how important a soundtrack could be to a movie. The film Snatch is very fast paced and for the soundtrack to be effective and keep that pace. It is an exciting mix between jazz and classic rock that was very effective at keeping the movies fast pace. While the soundtrack for Citizen Kane had to bring added emotion to the dramatic scenes while still keeping a light hearted tone with the movie was more comical or musical. I think the movie had either an orchestra or some sort of band that sounded like what we call big band music today. This soundtrack was also successful is adding some extra emotion to all scenes in the movie. The character of Charles Foster Kane truly was an enormous reason why the film was so fascinating. At the beginning of the film the viewer is told that Charles Foster Kane has died and you get mixed felling about his death from some of the other characters. Some were sad but many where pleased he was gone. I think this character was also interesting because we got see him grow from a little boy to an old man. The audience really got know him, and eventually understand that his last word, “rosebud,” was just his sled. I think is a symbol of his lost youth and innocents. This character truly made me believe that money can’t buy love or happiness. That’s why the character of Charles Foster Kane made this movie so great. As I’ve discussed earlier Guy Richie is a very innovative filmmaker. He has done 3 films to date and is in production on a 4th. His first film was called, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. He was the director and also wrote the screenplay. This movie was very original and has many visually ingenious scenes that will later be a staple in his movies. This movie was only limited to it’s low budget which seemed to get in the way of Ritchie’s artistic vision. His next movie Snatch was not limited ...
