Female Equality
...women were aiming for when they said that they wanted equal rights? This equality of women being in the workplace added to the skills that women did, but it also robbed these women of the chances to experience the things that being a woman had meant to the women of earlier times. Many women become so wrapped up in their careers that they do not think about such things as marriage and having families until it possibly becomes too late or almost so. So did the women really gain anything from trying to acquire equality? It all depends who you ask. The media supports these ideas of women robbing themselves of many things that they would experience had they not been in the workplace trying to become “equals.” Many films have had characters who had gained their liberty in society, but by doing so had lost many things such as men and families. Many television shows had story lines that made fun of feminist and their ideas. On the twist of things, Faludi describes how many books were published about the frustration and crisis that many feminist were having and how to take care of these problems. All of this media coverage definitely supported the thought of women getting what they wanted when they demanded equal rights. Another point made in the essay is that while women hold down much more employment in the workplace, they still are not equal. Statistics show that eighty percent of full-time workingwomen make less than twenty thousand a year. While there were now many women working, most of them were still doing jobs that had been seen as jobs that were for women such as secretaries, sales clerks, etc. It can also be seen that women are nowhere equal to men when it comes to holding government positions in our country. Even though women have come a lot closer to equality and hold many more jobs in our society, the idea of equality is just not becoming a reality yet. But now that women were finally starting to get moving forward on the road to equality, in the late 1980’s, they started to feel that they were being held back. Many workingwomen were quoted to say that they felt like the men in the workplace were now trying to retract all of the progress that women had made in the path towards equality. The question that was being asked the most though was whether it was men trying to hold back women from becoming equals or whether it was just the continuation of society’s ongoing resistance to women’s rights. Then all of a sudden the Equal Rights Amendment was defeated. This caused a major set back in the push forward toward equal rights. To many though, this backlash was nothing more than a strong indication that women really had an effect, just not enough to affect the majority. When affects of this type start to surface, they scare many opposing them and thus a backlash is begun. Even though the women had great eff...
