The main theme of the novel was the conflict between the older generation (the fathers) who are represented by the landowner Nikolai Petrovich Kirsanov and his brother Pavel opposing the radicals of the new generation (the sons). The “fathers” were the conservatives who opposed reform, and the “sons” were the liberals who wanted change. With quotes like this, “We old-fashioned people think that without principles, taken as you say on faith, one can’t take a step or even a breathe,” we can see the “fathers” outlook is one of a conservative. On the other hand quotes like this one, “The place were a man is born makes no difference,” said Arcadi implies that every man should have the equal right, when they are born, you should not be placed in a class. This view definitely represents that one of a radical or liberalist. The novel kicks off when Bazarof makes a trip to the Kirsanov estate to encounter his friend Arcadi, who is Nikolai’s son. Later, Arcadi falls in love with this character named Anna, the good-looking landowner, who rejected Bazarof. Bazarof then flirts with the youthful peasant girl Fenechka, Nikolai’s mistress and the mother of his child, Pavel confronts him to a duel. Pavel is injured in the leg, and then Bazarof returns home. While home Bazarof helps his father who’s profession is a doctor. He suffers an injury while performing an autopsy on a peasant who had typhus and dies because he does not cauter...
