Maybe pictures could have helped Connie understand her grandmother’s decision to list herself as white, rather than Native American. There were no pictures that showed Connie what her grandmother’s life was actually like, the home where she raised her three children, or what the town was like. Everything was passed down orally through storytelling. Storytelling was the only aspect of tradition that Connie found that showed her grandmother accepting her Native American heritage. But visual aids or some type of keepsake could have helped Connie realize that sooner rather then having to go all over the place to find the answer. Pictures and keepsakes would help aid in young peoples imaginations, helping them get a better sense of how life was like. Imagination can be distorted over the years, and a picture can hold a lot more truth in itself. My great grandfather and my uncle Kenneth passed away before I knew them.
