...f. Dunlop ends up talking to Morin and goes to Morin’s house. The two get into deep conversation that reveals Morin’s loss of his belief. Dunlop, who is not familiar with church and religion, assumes that Morin has lost his faith. Morin responds, “Do you think that would keep anyone from the confessional? You are a long way from understanding …I told you I lost my belief. That’s quite a different thing.” This is where the theme of the story emerges; determining the difference between belief and faith. Morin excommunicated himself with the church twenty years ago when he met his mistress. Sex before marriage is a sin to the church. Morin did not believe in this so he decided to stop believing in everything. This is a common event in society. The church possesses so many rules and is more concerned that people follow them that they push people away. He never went to confession for his sin because he did not have remorse; he loved the woman. Now after being away and not believing for so long he is scared to go back. He is scared that the teachings and laws he pulled himself away from will not come back to him when he returns and therefore he will loose faith. But, what exactly does he mean by faith? What doe he mean by belief? It all comes down to four words: Belief has; faith is. Belief has an adherence to a set of fixed ideas and principles that do not change. When believing in something you accept the truth and find it correct. Belief can also be confusing. A major part of belief deals with the understanding of the knowledge given. This can be deceptive to some that do not fully understand. This is shown through Morin. Even though at first, Morin did have belief, he took the word of the church to literal. The church said that what he did was a sin and in order for God to forgive him, he must confess. Since he did not believe in this, he lost his belief and pulled himself away. In fact, the words of the church are not all meant to be taken exactly as written. By doing so, we are too concerned with the rules of God, that we forget about the truth that God is trying to tell us. God’s love is turned into numerous law...
