Fahrenheit 451

...Later in the chapter he sees a woman die for her books. Her death greatly affects Montag and makes him wonder what was in the books that made the woman sacrifice her life. The symbol, “The Sieve and the Sand” comes from Montag’s childhood memory of trying to fill a sieve with sand on the beach to get a dime from a cousin. He compares the memory to reading the whole bible as quickly as possible on the subway, hoping that if he reads fast enough some of it will stay in his mind. In the chapter, Montag’s wife Mildred invites two of her friends, Mrs. Phelps and Mrs. Bowles, over at the house. Montag returns home from Faber’s, carrying the ear radio he gave him, and tries to bring them into conversation. He pulls out a book of poetry and reads it to them. Mrs. Phelps talks about her husband at war and cries while Mrs. Bowles is blaming Montag for reading it and says it’s evil. He then dumps the book into the incinerator at Faber’s convincing. He discovers Mildred burning the books one by one and he rehides them in the backyard. He goes to the fire station giving his book to him, and Beatty throws it in the trashcan. Soon an alarm comes through when they get to the house, Montag sees that it’s his own house. In “Burning Bright” Montag sees Mildred driven off by a taxi. He realizes that she was the one who turned in the fire alarm. Beatty then orders him to burn the house by himself with the flamethrower and warns that the Hound is on the watch for him if he tries to escape. So Montag follows the order and burns everything and is arrested after he’s done. Beatty notices that Montag has a radio in his ear and strikes his head until the radio falls out. Soon Montag turns his flamethrower and burns Beatty to death. Before leaving for Faber’s house, he runs to the backyard and gets the four books he hid. On his way he nearly gets run over by a car with young passengers. When he arrives at Faber’s, Faber instructs him to follow the old railroad tracks out of town to look for camps of homeless intellectuals and tells Montag to meet him in St. Louis sometime in the future, where he is going to meet a retired printer. Montag then takes Faber’s suitcase filled with old clothes and runs off....
