Faces of the Enemy
...raid of another attack and if nothing is done, their peaceful lifestyle will be changed forever. In Sam Keen’s essay Faces of the Enemy, he defines exactly what an enemy is. There are many different types of enemies according to Keen. In the situation with the United States I believe this would to be a situation of the “enemy as created by paranoia”. Mr. Keen defines the meaning of the enemy as simply the “stranger”. One does not know what the enemy is capable of, therefore one is afraid of them. Paranoia is the firm belief that one is being prosecuted. Therefore when one is paranoid that someone is after them, it is most often because they do not know what they are capable of. The United States is paranoid of the terrorists and are not a hundred percent sure of what kind of weapons they have and when they may attack or what they are capable of. They are an enemy because they are an outsider. Mr. Keen also mentions that in a paranoid imagination, the outsider is always evil. In this case, the outsiders are the terrorists and, of course, they are evil. After reading the article, one gets that impression Horsley 2 that the terrorists are the evil ones, who show no mercy for human life. I’m sure the terrorists think they are the ones doing the good and the United States is evil. I believe there is no one definition of an enemy. It is whatever the individual makes it to be. To the United States, the terrorists are just evil, heartless monsters looking to start a war and to the terrorists, the United States is and evil heartless county trying to take over...
