Exercising and Health

...ttained. However, one can start or restart at any time. Self-satisfaction is another factoring product from exercise. It gives direct satisfaction to one's self by living inside a fit body. All the effort put forth to keep a healthy body is something to be commended. It shows the qualities of self-improvement and self-worth in a person. Also exercise brings satisfaction to a person by being able to help others do the same thing with exercise. In this way, it gives satisfaction to the others around him or her also. With all of these benefits, there is no doubt that a person would ask, "How do I start?" There is a very simple and important factor that must play a part in one's daily life for exercise. Otherwise, exercising can be dangerous. That is nutrition. Exercise and nutrition are two separate terms, but should be thought of as one unit. Even without exercise, a lack of proper nutrition is damaging to human health. But, put exercising with it and that is even more dangerous in that the body will become run down and more vulnerable to disease (Davis and Palladino 654). As Bill Philips says in Body-for-Life, "Exercise is the spark. Nutrition is the fuel. Without both, there can be no flame-no results (83)." It is true that humans should be aware of the proper servings and to protect their bodies from obesity. However, there are three main food groups that the body must have to remain healthy. Those food groups are proteins, carbohydrates, and essential fatty acids (Philips 83). Proteins exist as meats such as chicken, turkey, and steak. Also, one can find a good source of protein in eggs and cheeses. Carbohydrates consist of vegetables, pastas, oats, breads, and fruits. Essential fatty acids are in foods such as safflower oil, sesame oil, canola oil, fish, and avocados. A tablespoon of any of these a day will give a person their need of essential fatty acids (Philips 89). It is also necessary to think of healthy eating as a lifestyle as opposed to a diet. A person's body should never feel as though it is being neglected or starved. It is a fact that when a person is hungry they become cranky and dissatisfied with their circumstances. This can lead to depression and an over all failure in trying to stay fit. It is good to eat at least five times a day, but it is what is eaten that makes all the difference. When a person is hungry between meals they should eat fresh vegetables and fruits, which are delicious snacks that give energy and nutrition. To begin exercising the common knowledge of the different types of exercise is required. The four main components of exercise are cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular fitness, flexibility, and body composition. Cardiorespiratory endurance is aerobic (meaning "with oxygen") exercise that allows a person to build up endurance. It is reflected in the sustained ability of the heart and blood vessels to carry oxygen to the body's cells (White 8). This type of exercise helps the heart to stay healthy also. Examples are walking, running, swimming, cycling, and aerobic movement. Muscular fitness consists of both strength and the ability to perform repeated muscular contractions i...
