...ge and graduated fourth in his class out of thirty-nine. Henry’s father wanted to be a lawyer but Henry wanted to have a career in writing. Then in 1828 Longfellow got an excellent job offer to teach at Bowdoin College, and in 1829 he accepted. He was a professor of foreign languages and became known as a wonderful teacher that all his students enjoyed and respected. So in 1836 Harvard University asked Henry to teach at their college. So he left Bowdoin to teach French and Spanish at Harvard. Even at a new college he was known as an excellent teacher, and received many awards acknowledging him. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow had two wives in his life. His first wife was a girl he went to school with as a young boy named Mary Storer Potter, she died in Holland in 1835. Longfellow’s second wife was Frances Appleton, they loved each other very much and had 6 children, in fact Henry wrote a poem for them that he called “The Childrens’ Hour”. Together they bought a house named “Craigie House” they enjoyed the house very much and had many parties in it. But one day a terrible thing happened, a fire broke out in the house and killed Frances. In a desperate attempt to save her Longfellow was badly burned.
