...ol. The Komsomol is the Communist Youth League organization. Then, in 1941, Hitler invaded the Soviet Union. Solomon was ordered, along with the other Jewish children, to flee into the interior. Here, he fell into the hands of the German forces. Paralyzed by fear, and with a courage born of despair, Solomon told his questioners that he was, in full truth, an ethnic German. To his surprise, he was believed, and from that point on, his survival centered on his ability to conceal his true identity. Solomon is taken under the wing of the Wehr-macht unit of the German army, and was used as an interpreter since he was fluent in Russian (from his days in the Komsomol). Solomon experienced combat and was praised for being a “model of German youth” contributing at the front, and lauded for his heroism. As a reward, Solomon is transferred back to Germany and sent to an exclusive boarding school run by the Hitler Youth organization. The school is designed to train Hitler Youth to face the challenges of the Fuhrer’s vision of post-war Europe. Here, Solomon continues to pose as an ethnic German youth, and he meets a pure German girl. However, he is unable to get intimate with her due to an aspect of his Jewish culture – his circumcision.
